A Billion Reasons Why Everyone Should Carry A Notebook

August 11, 2010

Of all the things that have ever sat in my bag I think a notebook has been the most useful. Having one on you all the time means you can never be bored, never forget anything and never let inspiration fall away from you.  They are super useful, versatile and fun – everyone should have one. For most days I like to carry an A5 notebook and a really thick calligraphy pen but if I’m going on a trip or on a long walk then I take my polka-dotted pencil case full of cheap colourful brush tip pens with me. Without further ado, a billion reasons you should carry a notebook!

* Write gratitude lists!

* To-do lists

* Perfect cure for boredom.

* Draw or write down anything you that inspires you – these are things you don’t want to be forgetting!

* Make paper aeroplanes.

* Write shopping lists and make them fun ^-^

* Doodle without a care. People should do this more – you don’t have to be an expert to draw.

* Make a mini vision board on a page or two to make your brain happy while you’re out.

* Write down favourite quotes or interesting things you hear the people around you say.

* Document everything! Take minutes! Forget nothing!

* Remember the last time you said “note to self”?  (okay perhaps it has been ten years) Actually write yourself a note next time. You’ll remember your advice to yourself that way.

* Make a dream diary. Write or draw down absolutely everything you can remember, locations, pictures, colours and then interpret them using a dream dictionary.

* If you don’t have a diary, it doubles nicely as one. Just write down all your appointments and you won’t forget them.

* Use it for your work and hobbies. Write down blog ideas, be a detective, a journalist, a poet etcetera

* Write down your aspirations, and in time write down ways you can make them happen

* Practise writing meditation.

* Be score-master when playing games!

* Write love letters and leave them in the street for anyone to find and make their day.

Got an idea of something you can do with a notebook? Leave a comment and one day we’ll reach a billion ideas!

Love, peace and paper,

How to Sing and Other Stories

July 16, 2010

Sorry for the misleading title – I can’t teach you how to be good at singing. I really can’t sing. This is about having the courage to sing. I’m really quite terrible, however I continue to do so all the time because it makes me feel good and it feels refreshing. I bring this up because I think it’s important to have courage and to do what we want to. Being self conscious is an issue that gets skimmed over too much for my liking. It is horrible at the time – however it can be overcome and learned from.

In my early teens being self conscious hit me pretty hard. So hard that actually I thought I might be paranoid. I remember that I wouldn’t even open my mouth to speak without looking over my shoulder twice, I never said anything opinionated because I was afraid of offending people and what they would think of me. I was afraid of expressing myself and my true feelings.

I just wanted to tell anyone who feels like this that they are not alone. In fact it is the majority of people who care what other people think. That is also your freedom, once you realise that everyone else is caught up in their own worries to notice yours is when you can move on. You can spend all day worrying about everything, about whether your hair looks okay to whether you should voice your opinion but you should know that most people are so wrapped up in their own worries and thoughts (are people staring at me? did I wear to much make up? does it make me look trampy? will it make me look like a nerd if I read this on the bus? does it make me look helpless if I take the bus? – it does get ridiculous!) to notice any of yours.

Like I said earlier, being self conscious at some point in your life can be learned from. When I was younger I once went to meet my wonderfully stylish friends in a t-shirt and jeans, I felt so second best all day, so since then I have been overdressed for everything and I adore it – it has become part of who I am! I guess that’s a little example….

But the best example and the very best thing you gain from overcoming self consciousness is perspective, which happens to be one of the best things ever. In fact most experience gives you perspective and well, it is a pretty bumpy road-ed experience so you’ll gain lots of it! Perspective makes you see things as the truly are which brings me back to singing. I sing on the street when I want to, I wear anything I like, I say what I feel when I feel it and everyone else should. So your singing badly on the street, so what? Does it matter what other people think? Of course not. Will you ever see those people again? Probably not, no. Try to get over your fears, be yourself and remember that you only live once – so sing.

Artists worst nightmare

February 27, 2010

Amongst the pressures to be smart, talented and beautiful,I think one of the scariest is the pressure to be “original”. Whether your trying to impress your boss, make fantastic art or just differentiate yourself from others I think the concept of being unique is lost.

People go very much out of their way to be different. Dressing differently, saying bizarre things and listening to unconventional music as to seem unique. However I find these attempts a little sad to watch because they never work. They make you look desperate and sheep-like. I mean, each of these poor people desperately trying to be different walk down the exact same path and therefore all end in the same place.

My belief is that being unique is easy (unless of course, you happen to be a clone). Each person has completely unique DNA, you know what that means? There is no-one in the whole world that is the same as you. You don’t have to try to be different, it’s just true. You are a unique original person.

I can’t write ‘A Short Guide to Being Yourself’. There is no certain way to be ‘unique’. The only advice I can give you is stolen from the wonderful mister Oscar Wilde,
“Be yourself;everybody else is already taken.”

February 14, 2010

I felt it was obligatory for me to write on this subject, but I’ll be honest with you, Valentines day is not my thing. In my life I have had not one romantic Valentines day. So perhaps this is going to be a little ‘a Christian’s account of their experiences during Ramadan’ but I just had to write about it!

Valentines day commercialism scares me. Fake roses with ‘messages of love’ written on them, teddy bears brandishing hearts (how in the world is this not terrifying? Think about it) , hideous underwear and cards that literally fill a room, all frighten me. I can honestly say I am happy I have never received any of these things. Promise me lovers, give nice presents. Please do not buy this nonsense and maybe they’ll stop making it.

And so I say, For the couples:

Do what you do best.

Make lonely people jealous – you are forgiven on this day. It is the one day of the year that it is okay to be stupidly romantic so make the most of it.I think making a pact not to give each other gifts would make the day so much nicer. Not that I don’t adore buying gifts but it would mean that neither of you will be stressing about what to give or whether you spent more money/time on it. Instead don’t you think it would be perfect just  enjoyed the day together?

And for us not-so-coupley people:

Do not wallow. That is literally a command. Call me ridiculous but I see absolutely no reason why tomorrow should make you upset or angry. So your alone… So it’s just Sunday. Please get over it. Just because your single doesn’t mean you aren’t a-frickin-mazing! Your just single, it’s an adjective.

So in all, my thoughts on Valentine’s day; make it cute and not stupid but realise that if you aren’t doing anything that is more than fine….

October 20, 2009

Thinking about my last entry (which you can read here) I don’t think I stressed enough the importance of a point I made because it is so important and so easy to forget!
*Don’t expect anything of anyone else. This sounds a little mean, but really if you want something, you have to do it and find it yourself. If you want something of someone else, how will they know unless you tell them?
This is revelant to everyone- i’m sure of it. We blame everyone and everything for our bad moods but the truth is that we are in control of whether we’re happy or not. We expect people to do and say things for us, without even telling them how we feel and if that isn’t bad enough, we then treat them as if they are guilty.
I’m pretty sure that everyone has acted this way and that includes me. Open your eyes and stop.
The only person you can rely on is you. If you want to be happy-forget everyone else and smile.

Peace and love

October 12, 2009

You don’t have to be a nice person to be happy. You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to be rich and you certainly don’t need to be successful. You have to be accepting of yourself and those around you. No one is perfect and no one ever will be. Remember compliments and forget insults. Start and end every day positively. Deal with problems as quickly and efficiently as possible-then forget them. Accept your past. Stop blaming other people. Smile.

I’ve devoted today to being happy and remaining so.  I understand that life is never going to be all roses but I don’t care because I can love what I have and work for what I want.

* Start your day without annoying alarms, do you want your emotions of the day to be irritated ones? Invest in an alarm that will play your favourite songs. Most phones will do it ^-^

* Eat more fruit and chocolate. Fruit is refreshing, nourishing and good for you. Chocolate is luxurious and filled with happy chemicals. They both smell gorgeous too.

* Tidy your bedroom! I know I probably sound like your mother  but honestly, it’s where you begin and end your day. It’s where you relax, shouldn’t it be nice to be there?

* Think about what you wear everyday. This isn’t about fashion or looking good. This about how the clothes you wear give and impression on you. How do the colours make you feel? (and I’m not saying don’t wear black etcetera. Black is should make you feel timeless and classy,  not morbid and dull as people often say.) What kind of person do you feel like when you wear these clothes? This is hard to describe… It’s a little like when an actor wheres a costume they feel in more of the role, than before they were wearing it. Do you feel confident?

* Be confident. Trust your instincts. Listen to all the voices in your head and consider.

*Don’t expect anything of anyone else. This sounds a little mean, but really if you want something, you have to do it and find it yourself. If you want something of someone else, how will they know unless you tell them?

* Stop being tentative.  Be decisive and honest with yourself.

* Try to think of something that made you happy today and dwell on it. I don’t care if you’ve been working all day, have come home to more work, burnt your dinner and can’t sleep. There is always good somewhere-go and find it.

Once you find happiness, don’t let anyone take it away from you.

Love and peace
